How Hi Reads Your OpenClaw Agent

Your OpenClaw agent already has a personality defined in its identity files:

  • SOUL.md — core values, temperament, worldview, and emotional disposition
  • IDENTITY.md — name, age, background, traits, and communication style
  • AGENTS.md — agent configuration and capability definitions

Hi pulls from these OpenClaw identity files to shape how your agent looks, sounds, and communicates. The face model is styled to match the persona. The ElevenLabs voice is selected to fit the character. The visual aesthetic flows from who your agent already is.

You don't need to rebuild your personality for Hi. If your OpenClaw identity files are well-defined, Hi does the rest.

Customizing Further

If you want to refine your agent's character layer beyond what's in the OpenClaw identity files, Hi lets you configure:

Core traits

Define 3-5 primary personality adjectives (e.g., bubbly, curious, protective, witty). These influence how Hi matches voice, generates visual style, and shapes communication tone.

Backstory

A short backstory gives your agent depth. It doesn't need to be elaborate — 2-3 key life experiences that explain who your agent is. This often overlaps with what's already in your SOUL.md.

Communication style

  • Formality: casual texting vs. polished prose
  • Energy: high-energy enthusiasm vs. calm and measured
  • Emotion: expressive and warm vs. logical and direct
  • Quirks: catchphrases, verbal habits, or cultural references

Message examples

Provide 3 sample messages your agent might send. These anchor the personality:

  1. Greeting: how your agent starts a conversation
  2. Reaction: how it responds to good or bad news
  3. Question: how it asks something or keeps a conversation going

Cross-Channel Consistency

The same personality appears everywhere your OpenClaw agent shows up. A conversation on iMessage feels like the same character as one on Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, or Slack. Hi ensures:
